Gas Line Repair, Installation & Testing

What happens after CenterPoint locks your meter

This is the part nobody explains, and it is the first thing people ask.

If CenterPoint comes out, confirms a leak and locks your meter, your gas is off and it stays off until a specific sequence is completed. Here is the actual sequence:

1. We pull a permit with the city
2. We dig and do the work
3. The ditch stays open — the city has to inspect it before it is covered
4. City inspects and passes it
5. We backfill
6. The city releases it
7. You call CenterPoint and they turn the gas back on

Two days minimum, and that is not us being slow — it is the sequence. A homeowner cannot pull that permit themselves, and no plumber can have the ditch covered before the city has looked in it.

We tell people this on the phone before we come out, because it is better to know on day one that you are two days from hot water than to be told on day two.

A recent job — Baytown meter lock-off

The riser detail is worth knowing if you are watching the work: the grey vertical section is the riser, and the yellow is the poly. Polyethylene gas pipe is not permitted above ground, so every buried poly run transitions to a riser at each end.

Annual gas pressure testing

Daycares, multifamily complexes and certain commercial properties are required to have an annual gas pressure test. We do the test and provide the paperwork the inspector wants, under Master Plumber License MPL 38224.

This does not apply to restaurants as a blanket rule. We are not going to tell you that it does in order to sell you a test. If you are not sure whether your property is covered, call us and we will talk through what applies to you.

Contractors: work that legally requires a licensed master plumber

A steady part of our work is jobs that other contractors and in-house maintenance teams legally cannot do themselves. Gas tests, permits, city inspections, meter relocations — anything an inspector has to sign off on.

One example: a contractor in Mont Belvieu was pouring a new driveway and the water meter sat where the driveway was going. The city required it to be moved by a licensed plumber with an inspection. We relocated it about fourteen feet — ten feet back and four feet over — and the city came out and passed it. The driveway was poured on schedule.

Why gas work is not a DIY job

We publish plain instructions for plenty of household plumbing. We do not publish them for gas, and we will not talk you through gas work on the phone.

The reasons are simple: the permit cannot be pulled by a homeowner, the inspection cannot be signed off without a license, and the failure mode is not a wet floor. If your gas is off and you want it back on, the fastest route is a licensed plumber starting the permit process today.
