Most people arrive at a repipe through one of three things.
Debris in the water. Brown flecks or grit coming out of the tap. That is the inside of the pipe arriving at your fixtures.
Pressure that has dropped off. Galvanized silts up internally as it ages, narrowing from the wall inward. People replace fixtures and buy bigger water heaters chasing a weak shower when the problem is the pipe. New fixtures on a silted-up line do not fix it, and that is money spent on the wrong thing.

A recent job — Baytown apartments

The customer noticed wet sheetrock in one of the units. We opened the wall and found the riser rusted through at a joint. The building dates to the 1970s and the galvanized is original — around fifty years old.
That riser feeds eight units. We recommended replacing the whole thing, because galvanized rusting at one joint means it is rusting everywhere along that run.
The owner chose to patch it. That is their call to make, and we did the patch.
We include that last line deliberately. We tell you what we think and then we do what you decide. You are not going to get a lecture, and you are not going to get a refusal to do the smaller job.
For property owners: one unit at a time
Most apartment owners cannot take a whole building out of service, and they do not have to.
The way this usually gets done is one unit at a time, as tenants move out — while the unit is already empty and the walls are being patched and painted anyway. No lost rent, no relocating tenants, spread over a few years instead of one enormous outlay.
We are happy to work that way. Tell us the turnover schedule and we will fit around it. Over three or four years a fifty-year-old galvanized building gets fully repiped and no tenant ever gets displaced for it.
Materials, and why they are not interchangeable
Uponor PEX-a inside. Flexible, fewer joints in the wall, and it handles a freeze far better than rigid pipe.
Copper stays copper outdoors. PEX degrades in sunlight, so we do not run it outside. Where an existing exposed run is copper, it goes back as copper.
We match what is there on repairs. PVC goes back as PVC. Copper goes back as copper. We do not use whatever happens to be on the truck, because mismatched material at a joint is where the next problem starts.
No torch where it matters. On copper we use Viega MegaPress press fittings — a mechanical joint made with a press tool instead of a torch. On a wood-sided house in Beach City, and in attics packed with timber and insulation, that means no open flame next to your framing.

The customer noticed the ground was wet. It had been leaking slowly for a while and they were not in a rush, because they had no working shutoff to stop it with. We shut it off at the street when we arrived so we could dig it up dry.
The above-ground copper section at the house entry had broken off completely. We showed the customer the photo of what we had found and they told us to go ahead — repair the line, fit a new shutoff valve, and insulate it.

Same symptom, water on the ground. The existing line was PVC, so we went back with PVC. Repaired and insulated for freeze protection.
What we leave you with
Every above-ground water line repair goes back with a working shutoff valve and insulation. The two things that cause the next emergency are no valve and no insulation — and after Uri, everyone around here knows exactly what an uninsulated line does in a freeze.
Test your main shutoff before you need it
On a job in Beach City the hose bib failed first. When we went to shut the water off at the main, the shutoff would not close all the way — it was still passing water. The customer had two choices: leave it and use the meter whenever he needed the water off, or fit a new quarter-turn ball valve. He chose the valve so he would never have to go out to the street again.
Most people find out their main shutoff does not work at the exact moment they need it to. It takes thirty seconds to check.
Drain line repipes
We repipe drain lines as well as water lines. In older houses that usually means cast iron that has scaled and deteriorated internally, and the symptoms look like recurring stoppages rather than leaks. Where the affected run is under a slab, that becomes a tunneling job — see sewer line repair and replacement.
Remodel plumbing
