How do you find a leak without opening the whole ceiling?
We ask what the stain has been doing before we touch anything. That one question separates the two kinds of leak:
A supply line is under pressure all the time. It leaks constantly and keeps getting worse whether anyone is in the bathroom or not.
A drain only leaks when water runs through it. If the fixture has not been used and the stain has not grown, it is a drain.
That distinction usually halves the number of places worth opening, before a single cut is made.

The customer had a stain on the ceiling below the upstairs bathroom.
Before opening anything, we asked what the stain had been doing. They had not used that tub in several days and the stain had not grown. That told us it was a drain, not a supply line. That put the tub shoe at the top of the list.
We opened a twelve-by-twelve square in the ceiling, cutting with a dust extractor, and there it was.
We narrow it down before we cut.
What are the signs of a hidden leak?
- A stain that grows even when nobody is using the room above it — that is a supply line
- A stain that only grows after someone showers — that is a drain
- A meter that turns with everything shut off
- Warm spots on the floor, which can point at a hot line under the slab
- Musty smell with no visible water
- Paint or sheetrock lifting at the bottom of a wall
What happens after you find it?
You get told what it is and what it takes to fix, before more of the ceiling comes out. Most of what we find behind a ceiling stain is a tub shoe, a trap, a joint or a supply connection — a repair, not a rebuild.

Why press fittings instead of a torch?
On copper we use Viega MegaPress — a mechanical joint made with a press tool instead of a flame.
In a ceiling or an attic you are working surrounded by timber and insulation. A cold joint removes the fire risk from the repair entirely, which matters more in that setting than anywhere else in the house.

How do you know where to cut?

Can you find a leak under the slab?

Do you use a torch near my framing?
Not where we can avoid it. On copper we use Viega MegaPress press fittings, a cold mechanical joint made with a press tool. In an attic packed with timber and insulation, that is the difference between a routine repair and an open flame next to your framing.
