The city main it ties into is typically several feet down and can be considerably deeper. There is no single correct number, because your depth is set by the depth of the main you are connecting to and the fall needed to reach it.
The part most people have not been told is that the depth is not constant along the run. It cannot be.
Why does the pipe get deeper as it goes?
Because a sewer runs on gravity. Nothing is pushing it — it goes downhill or it does not go.
Standard fall for a three or four inch drain line is a quarter of an inch per foot. That sounds like almost nothing until you multiply it: ten feet of run drops the pipe two and a half inches, a hundred feet of yard drops it more than two feet. So the end of the run nearest the street is always the deep end, and it is deeper than most people expect.

What decides the depth at a particular house?
- The depth of the city main. Everything works backwards from where you have to connect.
- The distance from the house to the main. More run means more fall means more depth.
- The elevation of the lot. A house sitting low relative to the street changes the whole calculation.
- Local code and the utility's requirements. These vary by jurisdiction and are worth checking rather than assuming.
- Frost line — but not here. In cold climates this is the governing factor. On the Gulf Coast it is not, which is why generic national advice about burial depth is misleading in Texas.
How deep are the drain lines under my slab?
Much shallower than the yard line. Drains inside the footprint of the house sit just beneath the slab, often only a foot or two below it, already falling toward the point where they leave the building.
That shallowness is what makes tunneling practical. On a Clear Lake job we tunneled fifteen feet under the slab to reach a line that had shifted underground and pulled apart at a joint — the repair happened underneath the house rather than through the middle of the floor. How do I find out how deep mine actually is?
It gets located, not guessed. A camera with a sonde transmitter in the head is pushed down the line, and a receiver above ground traces the run and reads a depth at any point along it.

Call 811 before you dig. Always, and it is free. But know what it does and does not cover: 811 marks utility-owned lines — gas, electric, water main, telecoms. It does not mark your private sewer lateral or your private water line, because those belong to you. Those two are unmarked, and those two are exactly what people put a shovel through.
Why does depth matter to the job?
It changes the method and it changes the cost. A shallow repair near the house is a modest excavation. A repair out near the street, six or eight feet down, needs shoring, more spoil to handle and more restoration afterwards.
It also decides whether trenching or tunneling is the right approach. Where the failure is under the slab, tunneling means the work happens outside the building — and for a business that cannot close, a care home or a restaurant, that is the difference between staying open and shutting down.
What about the depth of the water line?
Different rules entirely, and worth not confusing the two. A water line is under pressure, so it does not need fall and it does not get progressively deeper. It is generally buried shallower than the sewer, which is one reason it is more often the one damaged by digging.
